Alright some of you know I've been looking at wagons and had narrowed my choices down to a Magnum or a Passat W8. Well a wild card got threw into the mix that I'm going to go close the deal on tomorrow if possible:

Kinja'd!!!

Yep I actually found one and they want 7k for it. Sadly it isn't the manual but who cares

Kinja'd!!!

So what do I need to know about it? Pros, cons, stuff like that before I get into it? One thing I've heard is that it has a harsh ride but I can deal with that. But let me know what I need to know people.

fun quick cars that have a neat active suspension, good traction, booost, and all the utility ever. A good candidate for "most jalop car" of 2000-2009 :]

Main things to look out for if purchasing:

1. PCV Box replacement history

2. Timing Belt replacement history

3. Active suspension is working/ compenent (rubber items) replacement history.

4. Basic used car things (tires, brakes, interior, etc)

Well, it looks really clean. They're great cars. I dunno much about the reliability, but it can't be even close to as bad as a W8 Passat.

First off: Welcome to ownRship (hopefully)!

It's an 04 in Magic Blue and Gobi (Gobi is evil BTW) how many miles, and do they have service records?

I'm gonna assume about 120k miles. Needs the timing belt done even if it has less than 120k miles as it is 10 years or 120k miles. Make sure the AWD works. There are multiple ways to test this... Ask if the Angle Gear Collar has been replaced (if not it probably needs to be).

Check for oil leaks. Specifically around the spark plug cover and enquire about the PCV system.

To make sure 4C (the active suspension system) works press the buttons on the dash. Comfort isn't very hard, Sport is pretty hard, and Advanced will feel really really hard.

Check the lower control arms... They suffer from premature failure on all P2 Volvos.

Check and make sure the evil cup holder door is there.

Yes sir. #1 is also sometimes called a flame trap box, oil/air separater, or oil trap.

Let's put that in the books!

160k means all of that has been done I'd assume. No way it has gone 160k on the OE t-belt and struts. However, it might need a new angle gear collar they have a tendency to go every 75k-100k miles so it might be time again. And if it hasn't been replaced it needs a PCV overhaul.

Also been on the lookout for it saying 'tailgate open' perpetually. The wiring harness in the tailgate chafes and no longer sends the right signal to the car.

Additionally, see if the transmission fluid has been replaced at some point... Don't ever power flush it if you do replace the fluid. Drain and fill is the way to do it.

Yea it should all be dont. But I'm going to see if they hsvbe the service records also. A lot of the stuff you named just see!ms like basic maintenance that needs to be double checked that could get bad if left alone.

Your local Volvo dealer may have the records (if it was done at Volvo).

I own a 2007 S60R. I usually get new cars every 2-3 years because I get bored.

I have no intention of ever selling mine.

There's a lot of info you need on these, because they are not without their faults; mostly reliability.

Go to Swedespeed to get a pre-buyers checklist. I can't stress enough that you definitely shouldn't get the first one you find based on proximity - this is one of the last cars you should 'settle' with. Granted, you could find one for 7k, but it may need 4k in work to be as good as one that's for sale for 9k.

If you can, look for a 2006+, because the autos aren't torque neutered after 2006.

Very informative thank you. Great review too. I think I'll be going into you for questions or concerns if I Gert this. Glad to see a lot of people have them. Well S60s at least. Haven't found or seen many V70 owners. Maybe because I'm a dad.

NP. I'm not by any means an expert. I outsource all my mechanical work to my guy up in Connecticut. Given that you're in California (I think), that's obviously not an option.

Create a Swedespeed Account, and everyone there will definitely help. A lot of people there will actually be willing to go out of their way for you. It's not uncommon for members to check out cars for people interested. In fact, I looked at a rebuilt Passion Red VR for someone a month back before they drove to pick it up from New Hampshire.

Yea I created an account. Hopefully people can help me. But yea I am in California. There's no local Volvo places near npme besides dealers. A lot of the speciality places are closer to LA or in Orange county. I'll have to look around.

From what I've seen, Volvo's are mostly East Coast Cars, but pockets exist, such as in Colorado or the Northwest.

With gas prices, it may not be a bad call to ship one...
